Title: Critical Reading (G6 - 8)

Course Description:
Over the course of our eight, we will train in the fundamental skills necessary to achieve high scores on the SSAT/ISEE tests and also apply these skills in reading, analyzing, and writing about literature. Roughly the first three sessions will be devoted to reading comprehension, the next two to writing, and the last three to vocabulary building, with some overlap and review. Students will be responsible for reading and discussing one short story per class, writing essays, and for keeping up with various other assignments from the course vocabulary and test prep books. The instructor holds a doctoral degree from the University of California at Berkeley and has taught middle and high schoolers in the area for almost twenty years. Your student will undoubtedly learn a great deal from taking this class.
The class will consist of the following specific contents and learning objectives:
- Guided reading of stories, fiction and non-fiction passages
- Story structure, key ideas and details
- Massive vocabulary-building
- Multiple exercises and assignments related to English and to SSAT/ISEE tests
